Stroke

A Stroke, or a Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), is an interruption in the flow of blood to the brain which occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or when a blockage develops.  Decreased blood flow to the brain can cause the brain to be deprived of oxygen.  If the brain does not have adequate oxygen, the brain tissue dies, resulting in loss of function of the areas controlled by that part of the brain.

The effects of a stroke can be devastating and even life threating. If treated early, the effects of a stroke can be minimized by medication, surgery and a specialized rehabilitation program.   It is important to know when a stroke is occurring and seek treatment immediately.

Common Stroke Symptoms:

  • Slurred Speech
  • Facial Paralysis
  • Impaired Vision
  • New Onset of Confusion or Difficulty Understanding and Communicating
  • Sudden Weakness (especially in an arm or leg on one side of the body, even if temporary)
  • Loss of Balance
  • Migraine or Severe, Sudden, Debilitating Headache
  • Numbness or Loss of Sensation
  • Dizziness
